Straight answers to the most common wiring questions about the 1G intermediate toggle switch, from cross switching to detail kit choices.
Quick answer
Use the 1G intermediate toggle switch only in the middle position of a three-switch lighting circuit, between two two-way switches. It is not a substitute for a two-way switch at either end.
Why the middle position matters
An intermediate switch has four terminals and crosses the conductors internally, so it can only join two existing two-way switches. Putting it at an end of the circuit leaves one switching path incomplete and the light will not respond as expected. If your circuit has only two switch points, you need a two-way switch, not this one.
When a two-way switch is the better choice
Two-way switches are used at both ends of a two-point circuit. The intermediate switch adds a third control point in the middle. Before ordering, count the switch positions in the room and confirm the middle one is the only place you need the cross function.
Common questions answered
- Can I use this switch as a two-way?
- No. The intermediate switch is designed for the middle of a three-switch circuit and has four terminals. A two-way switch has three terminals and is used at each end. Check your circuit has three switch points before buying.
- How do I wire the four terminals?
- Connect the two incoming switched-live conductors from the first two-way switch to one pair of terminals, and the two outgoing conductors to the second two-way switch to the other pair. The switch crosses the pairs internally. Label the conductors before disconnecting the old switch.
- What do the detail kits change?
- The detail kit provides the visible toggle arm and coin screws in steel, brass or white. It does not change the electrical rating or wiring. Choose the detail finish to match your other Buster + Punch metalwork.
- Is this switch suitable for a white wall?
- The white finish is UV-stabilised and designed to stay consistent. Pair it with white detail kits for a uniform look. Order the white detail kit if you want the switch to blend in.
- Do I need a neutral wire?
- No. An intermediate switch only switches the live conductors and does not require a neutral at the switch position. Confirm your wiring has the two live pairs expected by an intermediate switch.
